Ubol Ratana Dam Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid Project, Thailand
Thailand’s government is embarking on an initiative that aims to establish 16 floating solar farms with a cumulative capacity exceeding 2.7 gigawatts (GW) by the year 2037. One of the standout projects within this scheme is the Sirindhorn Dam, which is being hailed as the world’s largest floating hydro-solar farm, which integrates solar, hydropower and energy storage systems.
Presently, the country's clean energy capacity stands at approximately 12 GW, and this project will play a pivotal role in helping Thailand advance toward its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Moreover, the endeavour is expected to generate numerous renewable energy job opportunities, benefiting local communities and contributing to sustainable economic growth.
MacIntyre Wind Precinct, Australia
The Maclntyre Wind Precinct, located in Australia, is a significant onshore wind energy development comprising two wind farms currently in construction. When operating at full capacity, this AU$ 2 billion project is anticipated to produce 1 gigawatt of electricity, becoming one of the world’s largest onshore wind farms. This project encompasses the installation of 180 wind turbines and the construction of 65 kilometres of transmission lines, along with two new switching stations. It is expected to create employment opportunities for approximately 600 individuals, contributing to wind energy sector job growth.
Australia-Asia PowerLink, Singapore and Australia
The Australia-Asia PowerLink (AAPowerLink) is a groundbreaking energy infrastructure initiative scheduled to commence construction in 2023, becoming operational by 2026 and reaching completion by the end of 2027. This ambitious project entails the establishment of an intercontinental power grid spanning from Australia to Singapore, facilitated by the world's longest submarine power cable. Notably, the AAPowerLink will encompass the world's largest solar plant and the world's largest battery.
At full capacity, it is projected to fulfil approximately 15 per cent of Singapore's electricity demand, with plans to export electricity to Indonesia. The project is set to generate about 1,500 jobs during wind farm construction and an additional 350 lineman jobs once it becomes operational, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy and regional energy cooperation.
Kapar CCGT Power Plant, Malaysia
In line with the Asia-Pacific region's continued reliance on fossil fuels, Malaysia is investing in natural gas as a vital component of its energy mix. The country is embarking on the construction of a new 2.1-gigawatt combined-cycle power plant in Kapar, located approximately 50 kilometres west of Kuala Lumpur, with an estimated cost of $2 billion.
This advanced facility will utilise a gas turbine for electricity generation, with the waste heat channelled to a nearby steam turbine to produce additional power. In alignment with Malaysia's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the plant is poised to enable hydrogen co-firing when it commences commercial operations in 2031, concurrently providing employment opportunities for local residents.
Sarulla Geothermal Power Generation Project, Indonesia
Indonesia is a geologically active nation blessed with abundant geothermal energy resources. Remarkably, it holds approximately 40 per cent of the world's geothermal energy reserves, making it the second-largest geothermal power producer globally, trailing only the USA.
The Indonesian government has been steadily incorporating new geothermal power plants into its energy grid, with the 330-megawatt Sarulla Geothermal Power Generation Project standing out as one of the most significant additions in recent years. Completed in 2018, this expansive power plant not only supplies energy to the homes of 2.1 million people but also generates approximately 1,800 geothermal jobs for local communities. It is a prominent example of one of the world's largest geothermal power plants, harnessing Indonesia's rich renewable energy potential.
