Jim Schuhl Sr, PresidentWhen it comes to the waste-to-energy industry, McNeil is known for its durable refractories that can withstand the rigors of the harshest operating environments. It primarily offers silicon carbide and alumina-based refractories for waste-toenergy applications. While silicon carbide-based refractories are specifically designed for easy heat transfer to boiler tube walls and abrasion resistance to boiler tube walls, aluminabased refractories are built for abrasion resistance, particularly in ash hoppers.
“We are a full-service company, covering everything from the distribution, manufacturing, and installation of refractories, installation and repair of boilers, kilns, and other heat-management equipment to sandblasting and welding repair. We relieve our clients of the burden of finding different subcontractors for each service,” says Jim Schuhl Sr, president of McNeil USA. “Our staff holds an R-Stamp (#R4938) from the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors, which allows them to perform boiler and refractory repairs.”
McNeil also provides customized pre-cast ceramic blocks that offer excellent heat loss control and help overcome issues in highly reactive environments. They are ideal for quick lining replacements as they are cured and baked out pre-installation, saving time and improving efficiency.
“Our goal is to ensure the job gets done fast and right while staying true to our promise of customer-centricity,” says Schuhl. “We are aware that no two customers have the same needs, and we always strive to tailor our services to each customer’s requirements.”
In one instance, McNeil USA helped a leading energy-fromwaste and industrial waste management services company that was facing issues with the monolithic refractories in their ash hoppers. The bake-out process was not taking place as expected, as the ash hoppers were located underneath furnace boilers. They were also subject to severe abrasion conditions and wear and tear. Instead of removing and replacing the lining during repair, the client chose to increase the thickness, causing the ash hoppers to become overweight and dislodge from their structures. The McNeil team found the perfect solution and provided them with alumina-based, abrasionresistant pre-cast ceramic blocks with insulation properties. With strong, pre-fired blocks, McNeil helped the client resolve the bake out issue they were facing.
